Alan is the leading hand and is in charge of the machinery that makes/mixes the moulding sand  that you can see in the moulds going around on the belt. The sand is hand tested before it is released onto the conveyer belt and delivered to the moulders who are about where I have taken this picture from.

If Alan gets the sand wrong then it cannot be used and the men will throw it back at him.
